INSECT REPELLENT
Insect reprellents such as Peaceful Sleep, Tabard and Citronella Oil are strongly advised. Also mosquito coils. Although there are not many mosquitoes due to the onshore breeze from the sea, there are palm flies that bite and the best repellent for these is Citronella Oil. It is advisable to wear long sleeved shirts and light cotton longs on summer evenings
WHAT IS A DHOW?
A coasting vessel of Arabia, East Africa, and the Indian Ocean. It generally has one mast and a lateen sail. In Mozambique, the locals use this for for various purposes, eg: transportation, fishing, tours and services for tourists for a reasonable fee. Inhambane's harbour still has the largest fleet of working dhow's to this day!

Often confused with 'Pemba Island' in Zanzibar of Tanzania...Welcome to the very Northern part of Mozambique, to a city called Pemba (formely known as Porto Amelia). The city lies on the southern side of Pemba Bay - a VERY large bay ... In fact, its the 3rd largest natural bay in the world (13,000 HA) and the Largest Bay in Africa from Ponta do Diabo to Ponta Maunhane!
It is said that if every ship in the world had to dock in Pemba Bay, there would still be more space!

flights to Johannesburg now available for South Africans (links also to Nairobi and Dar Es Salaam) and much more! A great nightlife can also be enjoyed in Pemba and around the holiday resorts.

Pemba is well renowned for its magnificent portugese colonial architecture - most of these beautiful buildings and structures can be found in the older parts of the town (called the Baixa). You will noticeably see the busier side of the more modern part of the city, set up on a hill above the port. Here you can find the common facilities cities usually provide such as: banks, exchange bureaus, restaurants, shops and supermarkets ... and if you are interested in either buying something or a bit of 'window-shopping' ... then do head off to the famous 2km long craft market that sells absolutley almost anything, including radios, cell phones, beds, cloths, fruits & veg and much more!
