*Bare in mind, most people report fans sufficient enough to cool themselves even over hot summer nights
Welcome to the House of the Rising Sun - Your Happy Place! Situated on the edge of the peaceful Guinjata bay, just 20km south of Inhambane, Mozambique, this self catering beach villa boasts magnificent sea views from two rooms and a sunny deck.
Enjoy lazy days out on the deck and breezy evenings at the built-in braai area, all overlooking the clear blue ocean.
Perfect for families, groups or couples with tailor made packages to suit your requirements.
There is a large range of activities on offer. If you love the ocean then you will be in for a treat. Some activities are only available at specific times of the year and require the use of third party operators.
Laid-back leisure is what House of the Rising Sun is all about. Guests have the option of doing everything or nothing at all. On the beach guests can enjoy diving, snorkeling, fishing, canoeing and surfing. For the adventurous, enjoy sea safaris and tours by the locals, exploring the surrounding towns of Jangamo.
Contact us before your trip for assistance in planning your activities.
We've gone about collecting some of our most favourite activities. These are activities that we have actually done and enjoyed ourselves and personally recommend you try these out! From sea safaris to diving with the Manta Rays, to snorkeling with the whole family and a deep sea fishing trip to top it all off.
We might make it sound perfect ... but that because it is!
Make this holiday about you, experience everything and most of all have FUN!
The warm waters of the Mozambican coastline offer some excellent scuba diving opportunities where you can view a variety of sea life including turtles, reef fish and even bigger game fish, including the gorgeous Manta Rays. There are two very reputable dive centers located just a beach walk away. Get in touch we will connect you.
Experience exceptional deep sea fishing with one of the local operators. Game fish are caught throughout the year with the most popular species being yellow fin tuna, wahoo, king mackerel, queen mackerel and dorado. For the hardcore fishermen, marlin and sailfish are best fished between October and January. Join the annual Guinjata Bay Fishing Comp every June.
One of the most awesome activities to do in Mozambique is to dive, but that is not always a "family activity" but snorkeling offers a gorgeous under water experience. Mozambique is a snorkeling paradise, so pack your mask and flippers. We found that the best place to snorkel was Paindane, which is approximately 5km from our house and a 20 minute drive.
Go on a sea safari of the nearby reefs and explore the warm Indian Ocean alongside the resident dolphins. Be on the lookout for tropical fish, turtles and whale sharks too. Between May and December, watch Humpback whales passby while you enjoy breakfast on the deck. In May the whales are moving north to their breeding grounds and from September they head south for the nutrient rich waters of Antarctica.
Try your hand canoeing or kayaking in the ocean. If you are lucky, you might even get to share a wave with one of the bottlenose dolphins that frequents the area. With a wide coastline to explore, how better to do this than in a canoe or kayak? For the avid fisherman, the kayaks also provide an opportunity to do some light tackle fishing trawling behind the backline.
Mozambique has become a popular country for surfers to explore and chase big swells. The best time to enjoy warm waters and uncrowded surf is from February through to October, with the bigger swells coming in June and August. If you're visiting us during December, this is the best time for your little ones to enjoy the waves!
Enjoy a truly authentic Mozambican experience at Pansy Island. The island only appears during low tide and is named after the famous Pansy shells, which can be found all over the island. Take a traditional dhow to the island with the locals, and explore the beaches in search of the delicate pansy shell and explore the crystal clear waters where you'll find micro marine life and starfish colonies. Pack your snokeling kit for this!
At low tide the beach presents the perfect surface for a relaxing ride along the water's edge with fat bikes. There are kilometers of beach on your doorstep that can be explored without possibly seeing another human being. We don't know of any companies renting out bikes, so you would need to bring your own, but it is definitely worth it.
Support the locals and take an enjoyable sundowner dhow trip around the bay departing from Inhambane. It's a great way to experience the silence of the ocean, with just the wind behind you and the sun on your face. There is nothing like watching the red African sun disappear over the horizon with your favourite drink in hand. Get in touch with us for details of this experience.
The warm Indian Ocean offers the ideal playground for one the most exhilarating water sports on earth. The north east wind that prevails between July and November each year seldom disappoints. Get your adrenaline pumping in the waves directly in front of the villa or enjoy the calmer flat water of Guinjata Bay (own equipment required).
Our personal best activitiy! It has been past down from generation to generation in our very own family. Get down onto the beach when its dark (take bright torches), one person shines the torch and carries the bucket, the other people take sand in their hands and chase after the crabs, while the torch bearer follows the crab with the light. You throw the sand on top of the crab, to basically pin it down and dust the sand off the top of the crab to reveal its body, grip the crab and put him in the bucket.
Note: this is a catch and release fun activity. We always let the crabs go at the end of a fun evening... no harm done
With your fishing rod in one hand and a bit of luck on your side, fish from the beach directly in front of the villa. Local passers-by will be more than happy to share some of their tricks and tactics of catching in the area that have been passed down from generation to generation. On calmer days, you can take a walk to the rock-pool area in the bay itself and fish from this jutting structure.
Food glorious food! Besides the villa having a well equipped kitchen and you being able to to prep all those amazing meals; you also deserve a couple of nights off.
So go on, get out there and enjoy a meal prepared just the way you like it! And then take a walk along the beach back "home" to the villa.
We've had loads of fun checking out all the yummy places to eat within walking distance of the villa as well as in the sleepy town of Inhambane, just 30km from the villa.
Seafood is obviously a major request at all beachside restaurants and we recommend you definitely try out the fresh stuff.
Just a small note, December is not the best time for prawns, so it is often short this time of year.
If seafood is not your taste, make sure you try out the Portuguese Chicken dishes, they are amazing.
Enjoy the finest of Portuguese cuisine and seafood. With a well-stocked bar this is a great place to meet new people from around the world and share your experiences. There is also a television at the bar, allowing you to keep on track with recent sporting events. In all our years of visiting Mozambique this is still one of our favourites.
Cowries Restaurant & Bar, is just a short beach walk away from our villa. This family restaurant offers great food and friendly service with a casual and relaxed atmosphere. The restaurant & bar is conveniently situated in the centre of the bay with perfect views. Cowries is normally very busy, so make sure that you book a table. Their seafood is really yummy!
The Safety Stop located within the Guinjata Dive Centre in the cosy corner of the bay is one of our favourite restaurants. An awesome stop for a good coffee at the end of a long beach walk early morning, or even a good size breakfast. Lunch and dinner are always a hit here with delicious seafood, steaks, ribs and of course Portuguese chicken. The ambience is one of beach living with sand between your toes as you enjoy the social atmosphere, Mozambique style all the way.
Bistro O Pescador is situated in the old port of Inhambane near the ferry pier to Maxixe offering patrons delicious seafood, curries, pizzas, chicken, salads, fruit, cappuccinos, coffees, various liquors and wine. Their tranquil garden setting has outdoor seating with lovely views of the harbour and pier. We always stop here for a bite when doing our grocery shop in Inhamabane.
If you find yourself in the little town of Inhambane, be sure to stop at Ponte Cais, which is situated at the port entry. They have the best pizzas in town as well as seafood and local meals. While exploring the little town Ponte Cais is great for a stop over lunch, with spectacular views of the bay and port pier. If you happen to be around in the evening on the weekend, be sure to experience their festive night hospitality, or take a stroll along the quiet pier.

If you are serious about planning a holiday in Mozambique for Easter, the school holidays or during the Christmas festive season and New Year, then we highly suggest you start placing enquiries a few months in advance to avoid dissapointment. Eg: Start enquiring no later than October for the December holidays.
Believe it or not, people start enquiring as early as January for the December holidays.

Remember, some establishments charge either per unit or per person sharing. If the rate is per unit, then you'll see we have conveniently divided the rate to what-it-would-be per person sharing on their advert under the "Rates" tab.
Some establishments charge in different currencies such as the US Dollar, South African Rands or Mozambican Meticais (Mt).
So we've provided a handy currency converter tool at the bottom left-hand side of your screen (or under 'Useful Tools' if you're on a mobile device) to convert these currencies into yours.
Use our Mozambique Pictorial Map to find other amazing places you've never heard of before whether it be close to where you're looking or further beyond. There are so many "hidden gems" in Mozambique than just the usual spots.
For better understanding, we have put together a brief summary guide of what each category means and to also give you an idea of what each associated icon refers to when you see them on listings & adverts.
Listed in alphabetical order
Those who are on a tight budget should keep a lookout for this category icon. This type of establishment offers dormitory (shared) bedroom accommodation with other "Backpackers" generally using either single beds or bunk beds with a communal kitchen and shared ablutions.
Meaning the venue has its own bar on-site with staff serving alcohol/non-alcohol beverages and perhaps "pub-grub" included. They may offer satellite TV for bar patrons to follow the latest sporting fixtures live and may also host live music on certain days / evenings.
If an establishment has this icon, this means they either include breakfast in their rates or offer the opportunity for you to choose to include breakfast during your stay which is usually served to guests in an on-site breakfast room dinette or restaurant. Some B&B's offer basic / light (continental) breakfasts, Full English breakfasts or buffet style breakfast options.
Either they offer camping grounds for you to pitch your own tent if on a tight budget and / or they have their own pre-setup tents for you to camp in, some offering private facilities (aka "Glamping") within their tents such as beds, a fridge, sofa and bathroom.
This means the establishment has a dedicated hall room specially arranged and equipped with most facilities to host important business meetings, teambuilding events or any other occasion alike.
Goes without saying. Any establishment marked with this icon and listed under this category offers facilities for those who have reduced mobility. They may have basic facilities for these conditions or advanced. Kindly enquire with them directly for more information and/or specific requirements you may need.
These are dive centres who are a team of qualified dive instructors (PADI which means Professional Association of Diving Instructors) offering SCUBA diving lessons for clients and excursions to some of the best dive sites in the region for an unforgettable underwater adventure.
Environmentally friendly establishments built by local communities using naturally sourced / non-toxic materials with the objective of protecting the surrounding habitat. These types of lodges range from rustic bush and beach to luxury accommodation. Not only does this movement protect the environment, but it also helps support local families.
This means the associated business offers professional paid-for deep sea fishing charters / outings and excursions for those fishing enthusiasts (and for newbies). They generally have a fully equipped fishing boat and all the fishing gear ready for clients to bait up and cast a line. Their expertize, knowledge and experience will reward you with some of the best fishing spots for an action packed deep sea fishing experience.
If you're looking to invest or buy property in Mozambique, keep an eye out for this category for the latest in the property market.
Full Board means breakfast, lunch and dinner (also known as "All Inclusive"). If a venue is listed under this category, then they either offer guests the choice of a full board meal plan during their stay or their rates by default include full board meals. a lot of these establishments will have private personal chefs serving guests top class cuisine.
Because this is a popular search and request amongst many, we have created this specific category for exactly that - group accommodation which is very much the same as our Holiday Homes category. These are establishments that can cater and accommodate for large groups of 8 people and up in the same house / unit offering most self catering facilities as if you are "home away from home".
Similar to a typical B&B, a Guest House is usually a private house offering very few accommodation units all within the main building structure (or some seperately). Some serve home cooked meals within their in-house dining room specially catered to seat all their guests and offer a lounge area where fellow travellers can interact, socialize and share stories.
This type of accommodation is usually ideal for large groups of people going on holiday being a "home away from home" with numerous bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen for your self catering needs, lounge, toilets, braai/BBQ area, some with a swimming pool and some offering exclusive privacy.
Very self-explanatory. A venue will be listed under this category if they offer a specific luxury, private honeymoon suite or because our admin has "hand-picked" the establishment to be perfect for such an occasion based on their location and facilities offered. However, you are the best judge when it comes to planning that special getaway with your loved one anyway. Pssst ... and it doesn't have to be expensive either to enjoy, right?!
A hotel is generally a large premises that can accommodate a large amount of guests in many adjacent rooms grading from standard 2 sleeper units to "executive" luxury suites offering more in-room space and facilities. They generally have a restaurant and bar on-site for all day meals and drinks (quite often offered on a buffet dining basis). Other on-site facilities may include a swimming pool, gym, spa, in/outdoor entertainment area for kids, a conference / wedding room for meetings / ceremonies and a small shop.
This indicates that the establishment has a small / large restaurant on-site for their guests (they may also accept walk-ins for non-guests) or they have on-board catering staff serving guests in their own private space or in a designated dining area.
This type of establishment offers guests facilities required to cater / cook on their own terms whether it be within a holiday home for example or on communal grounds.
This means the establishment has spa facilities and services offered to guests who are looking for personal treatments during their vacation.
These business services can range from swimming with dolphins, horse riding, city tours, boat tours, island tours, dhow tours to game drives and more. You'll have to click on their advert to find out more and what they have to offer.
This means, the venue has all the on-site facilities and catering services to host large or small weddings and ceremonies. Depending on the size of the wedding, some may have enough units to accommodate all wedding guests.
