  • Nuarro is the perfect setting for a tropical beach honeymoon in Mozambique and / or for families and groups

Located on the shores of the warm and azure Indian Ocean in northern Mozambique, lies the remotely, but specifically chosen Nuarro Lodge. Backed by the wild Mozambican bush, fringed with old and established baobab trees to the back; and fronted by the calm and aquamarine bay of Nanatha, the lodge is peppered along a more than 2km-long, powdery-white beach in the middle.

Built from natural materials, by the local community, makes the environmentally sensitive. Nuarro Lodge, the ideal venue in which to relax and unwind in these equally pristine surroundings. Nuarro Lodge is all about friendly people, top-class activities and fantastic food, showcasing a spectacular, pristine environment in the most responsible way possible!

The Nanatha bay ends at a wonderful point known as Nuarro (which is how the lodge got it's name). This formed from ancient coral rock which has eroded over aeons of time. In keeping with the local theme of the lodge, we decided on a local name, and Nuarro was the perfect choice.

Beaches

Nuarro Beach

The Nuarro beach fringes the bay and runs along the front of the entire lodge, making a half moon shape, all the way past the village and to the point of the Nanatha bay.

The beach itself spans more than 2km in length, which makes for some magnificent early morning runs (on the low tide) or late afternoon romantic strolls.

There is often some beach volleyball (sometimes rather intense competitions) in front of the activities centre, or sometimes the remnants of some fantastic sandcastle building, designed by the happy, duly occupied ‘little’ Nuarro guests, to be found on the beach. Some guests even opt for a back massage under the shade of the Casuarina trees on the beach.

Access to the beach is easy, right from your own private pathway from your chalet, or the beach bar and activities centre or the restaurant.

Of course, Nuarro is one of the only lodges in northern Mozambique that has shore entry diving and snorkeling right from the beach!

Private Beaches

Not only do we have the spectacular 2km long lodge beach, but there are many other private beaches a short distance from the lodge.

We can arrange a wonderful picnic for you to spend a romantic day alone with your loved one, or a memory-filled day with your family. Please see our section on beach picnics for more information on these.

There are quite a few private beaches that we utilize, and these are accessible either by boat, mountain bike ride, car or a short walk away.

Nuarro Bay

Due to the relationships with the surrounding communities and Nuarro Lodge, all parties have agreed that Nuarro Bay is to be a protected area.

The biodiversity of the bay is unprecedented. There is a coral reef near the shoreline and many other fantastic reefs within the bay. The structure is a steady slope toward the edge of the continental shelf, which makes the marine life really special and diverse.

Glow diving

Did you know that much marine life is fluorescent? We are pioneers of glow diving or fluorescent diving in Mozambique. Our calm water and easy shore entry allow excellent opportunities for night diving, so why not to discover something completely new?! Snorkeling

Nuarro Bay is a dream for snorkelers. Snorkelling from the beach.

The Nuarro Bay is a sea life paradise with beautiful coral reef just a short swim from the beach. There are two reefs that are often used for snorkelling, these are:

Enupa Reef (house reef) – Shore entry: 100m swim, from 4 to 12m deep. Enupa Reef lays in front of the Activities Centre about 100m from the beach and is part of the Nuarro Marine Reserve. This is an easy and relax snorkel where you can spend lots of time around 5m but adventure down to 12m if you wish. Snorkel here can be done at most times of the day, but high tide is the best time as the entrance is easier. Photographers will be delighted with the macro life where they can spot many kinds of shrimps and crabs, snake and moray eels, nudibranchs, flatworms, and other marine life like gobies, egg cowries, butterfly-fish, wrasse, damsel-fish, blue spotted stingrays, puffer-fish.

Fish Alley, Boat entry, from 3 to 30m (in places sheer wall drops to 60m+). Fish Alley offer suitable conditions for all levels of divers and snorkelers. Therefore it is an ideal place to go when part of the group wants to dive and part wants to snorkel, everyone will leave the water with smiles in their faces. The shallowest part have a little bit of all, coral bommies, sea grass and the top of the wall. Coral bommies offer every one his own patch of coral with plenty of colours. Garden eels, cowries, ribbon eels, gobies, sand perches, mullets and puffers are found. This is a site where many fish come to visit cleaning stations; bi-colour and common cleaner wrasse compete to service the gills, skins and fins of all kinds of clients, sometimes not much bigger than themselves. Lyre tail and saddle back hog-fish are usually seen around as well as the Indian and African sand wrasse.

All equipment is available at the Nuarro Activity Centre.

Whale Watching

Nuarro is a fantastic place for whale watching. The calm blue water and close droop off allow us spectacular sights of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) during our winter. Humpbacks can be seen from the comfort of your chalet, or you can venture out with us on the boat for a close encounter. During whale watching with the Nuarro team you will receive in-depth information about them, assist in research and even have a chance to listen to the magical song of the whales with the assistance of a hydrophone. Of course, the quality of the encounter does not depend only on us as whales are a wild animal, however we will do our best to offer you the best whale experience in Mozambique.

The whale season starts in July and ends in November, with the peak season in August and September. Each year the pregnant humpback whales move from the cooler Antarctic waters to the east coast of Southern African to give birth and nurture their calves, before making the voyage back down to their summer feeding grounds. Sometimes you can also hear the whales singing underwater when snorkelling or diving!

Did you know ...

Humpback's can grow to around 16m long, weighing between 30-50 tons. Females are larger than males Distinctive white patches on the underside of the fluke (tail) are like fingerprints. Baleen whales are seasonal feeders and carnivores that filter tiny crustaceans , plankton and small fish. Eat around 2 tons of food, normally in two feedings, per day. Can dive for up to 30 minutes and to a depth of 150-200m) Can often be seen: Spyhopping (bobbing with their head out the water to look around) Lobtailing (sticking their tails out the water, swinging it around and then slapping the waters surface) Breaching (launching their bodies high out the water and splashing down again)

Massage Treatments

One of the best activities is doing “nothing”.

Maria, our Mozambican masseuse, who was born and lives in Baxio do Pinda (the village) has no formal training, but has learnt her trade from many mentors. She provides the most relaxing back and full body massages under the trees on the beach, this is certainly the best venue for a massage surrounded by ocean energies, breeze and sunshine. Rejuvenate body, mind and soul at this special holiday destination.

Feel her midas touch, and relax and enjoy!

(Massage in chalet is also one of the possibilities)

Other Activities

Mountain Biking

Mountain biking is a wonderful way to discover the Baixo-do-Pinda peninsula. Cycle to the old Portuguese lighthouse in the village and enjoy spectacular views.

There are currently 10 BTT mountain bikes, with standard equipment. For the land-lovers, or for a change of scenery from the beach, grab a bike (and some water) and cycle down to the lighthouse (around 45 minutes), or for a closer experience, peddle over to the private beach for a quick swim and back again (around 15 minutes).

Bird Watching

The Nuarro peninsula has a large variety of birds, and this is an informal activity, that all guests partake in (whether they want to or not), as the sounds and sights of the feathered friends are a 'normal' daily sight. If you venture out to the mangrove by kayak, you have a good chance of seeing various species of kingfisher. In and around the lodge, you are likely to see the lilac breasted rollers, and the brutalise coucal, to name but a few.

Beach Picnic

A dream comes true during your Beach Picnic. The ultimate indulgence! Allow yourself to be taken by boat (or road) to one of the deserted beaches and enjoy a delicious picnic prepared by the chef of the restaurant at Nuarro.

Spend your day soaking up the sun, reading a great book, swimming in the sea and tantalising your taste buds with Chef’s wonderful array of beach snacks, which include fresh wraps, samosa’s and other delectable surprises!

Dhow Sailing

The dhow is a traditional boat used by locals for transporting goods and for fishing in the bay. Pack some sundowners and snacks and you can sail a beautiful hand crafted local dhow. It is imperative that a booking is made for this prior to your arrival, as we do not have our own dhow and prefer to support the local community, which takes some arranging. Sailing trip on this elegant wooden boat is an experience that all guests entering Mozambique should have!

Kayaking

Simply spectacular is the Sea Kayaking activity in the bay. Visit the pristine beaches situated between majestic rock formations. Pamper yourself with a delicious picnic delivery. Do not forget to kayak through the mangroves. An experience never to be forgotten.

Nuarro has 3 single and 2 double kayaks (Nomad Feelfree) sit on top sea kayaks that can either be taken by the confident paddlers for an early morning or sunset (or anytime) kayak.

Some guests have had some wonderful dolphin (and even whale) interactions on our sea kayaks in the past, so try your luck!

Guided tours through the mangroves … The mangrove trip departs by boat, which takes around 20 minutes to the entrance of the mangrove, where the kayak route will start for around 30-45 minutes. The tour can only be done between the tides to be able to see crabs, mudskippers and some birds, like the kingfisher.

Paddling Board

There is no better way of exploring the bay of cruising on a paddle board. Paddling is about having endless fun and getting remarkably fit at the same time. It also happens to be one of the fastest growing water sports in the world.

Cultural Village Tour

From Nuarro you can easily go for a Cultural Village Tour and visit the local village of Nanatha where you can meet the local Macua population. Learn more about the work that Nuarro is doing, and how your stay at Nuarro contributes to the village and the community. Visit the school and meet the teachers. Have a tour through the Mosque, and wonder around to the football field, where you may be lucky enough to catch a competitive, but festive game!

The tour is taken by our community representative, Feliciano and takes around 1 hour, but you can really make this as long or as short as you like!

Honeymoons

Nuarro is the perfect setting for a tropical beach honeymoon in Mozambique. Nuarro’s white sand beach and the eleven small private beaches are idylle for an unforgettable honeymoon.

The spacious romantic chalets with complete privacy and stunning views over the beach and Indian Ocean are a couple of footsteps from the beach.

Honeymooners at Nuarro Lodge will get a romantic dinner on the beach and a beach picnic on one of the private beaches.

Families and Groups

Nuarro Lodge is a great place for family holidays, allowing you to escape hectic home-life and enjoy quality time with your family in this tropical paradise. It is also a fantastic opportunity for children to experience rural Mozambique life!

Our dedicated team are excellent with children and have creative ways to entertain your children when parents are out participating in some of the activities or having a quite moment together.

There are many different activities to keep children of all ages entertained. Most of the activities are child-friendly:- there is snorkelling from the beach, kayaking (double and single kayaks), stand-up paddle board, mountain bikes, beach volleyball and of course PADI scuba diving (from 8 years). These can all be arranged as guided activities, so our very capable team will accompany children. For the very young children there is always building sand castles on the gorgeous 2km long beach, and as a last resort for teens, there are video games available for those who cannot live without them.

Children

Nuarro's beach is perfect for children of all ages. With low tide the small tidal pool is teeming with marine life and fish. There is also always a conversation to be had with other children on the beach from the lodge and the nearby community.

Afonso, Nuarro's amazing Chef, always looks forward to being able to have fun and make the most scrumptious "kiddie" food, specifically designed to have the desired effect on fussy eaters.

Family Rooms

The family rooms are designed for families of 3 and 4, all beds have a mosquito net and cots (and high chairs) are also available on request. Planning for a family can be difficult, don't hesitate to contact us, we would love to assist you.

About Nuarro Lodge

Nuarro Lodge is located on the Baixo do Phinda peninsula in the Memba district of Nampula province, in northern Mozambique. The peninsula is virtually unknown to the outside world.

Marine Reserve – Nuarro lodge is comprised with the conservation of both land and the ocean, protecting hundreds of hectares of forest, mangrove and sea. The marine reserve was created in 2007 in common accord with the local community, to protect and recover the coral reefs surrounding the lodge. Over the years, the coral reefs have recovered, turning into a perfect safe habitat for thousands of colourful fish and stunning sea creatures such as nudibranchs, shrimps and many other invertebrates.

You can find the village woman are netting on the low tide and fisherman still catching fish on a wooden dug out, using both nets and line, the same method of fishing and way of living from more than a hundred year ago. Nuarro employees about 80 local people. The people are Macua.

The peninsula feels like an island surrounded by small private beaches, although conveniently Nuarro can be reached by car and does not require a plane or boat like an island. There is also so much to do at Nuarro, besides water activities, guests can also participate in other activities such as mountain biking or even a trip to the lighthouse at Baixo do Phinda to enjoy the incredible views of the bay.

Access to the World Heritage Site, Ilha de Mozambique (Mozambique Island), is easily done by road from Nuarro Lodge, which makes a great combination package. Enjoy the history and culture of Mozambique Island for a couple of nights, either on your way to or from the pristine beaches and remoteness of Nuarro.

Nuarro Lodge is a green project which generates its own electricity and clean water using renewable energy.

Nuarro lodge supports local community initiatives and during the construction of the lodge we also built a community centre.

History of Nuarro Lodge

Nuarro Lodge, this all started with the dream of the owners. They want to enable people to experience the wonders and beauty of Mozambique and they want to achieve this is an ethical way.

During its construction, skilled builders, carpenters and electricians were employed to assist in the training of the local unskilled people, so that they will have the chance to empower themselves and improve their livelihoods.

Land, time, skills, money, enthusiasm and energy were invested. In return Nuarro brings to its neighbours and partners greater financial security and general social development. Based on an established memorandum.

It is an experience that inspire visitors, staff and the local community.

Quick Tips
Booking early is crucial !!

If you are serious about planning a holiday in Mozambique for Easter, the school holidays or during the Christmas festive season and New Year, then we highly suggest you start placing enquiries a few months in advance to avoid dissapointment. Eg: Start enquiring no later than October for the December holidays.

Believe it or not, people start enquiring as early as January for the December holidays.

The "From" (starting) rates ...

Remember, some establishments charge either per unit or per person sharing. If the rate is per unit, then you'll see we have conveniently divided the rate to what-it-would-be per person sharing on their advert under the "Rates" tab.

Use the Currency Converter tool

Some establishments charge in different currencies such as the US Dollar, South African Rands or Mozambican Meticais (Mt).
So we've provided a handy currency converter tool at the bottom left-hand side of your screen (or under 'Useful Tools' if you're on a mobile device) to convert these currencies into yours.

Because this is a popular search and request amongst many, we have created this specific category for exactly that - group accommodation which is very much the same as our Holiday Homes category. These are establishments that can cater and accommodate for large groups of 8 people and up in the same house / unit offering most self catering facilities as if you are "home away from home".

Guest House:

Similar to a typical B&B, a Guest House is usually a private house offering very few accommodation units all within the main building structure (or some seperately). Honeymoon / Romantic Accommodation:

Very self-explanatory. A venue will be listed under this category if they offer a specific luxury, private honeymoon suite or because our admin has "hand-picked" the establishment to be perfect for such an occasion based on their location and facilities offered. However, you are the best judge when it comes to planning that special getaway with your loved one anyway. Pssst ... and it doesn't have to be expensive either to enjoy, right?!
